It’s Okay to Feel Your Feels

You know those days when you just want to cry? Nothing is necessarily completely falling apart, but somehow everything feels like too much. Work is frustrating. Things at home feel chaotic. You know those days when you just want to cry?

Nothing is necessarily completely falling apart, but somehow everything feels like too much. Work is frustrating. Things at home feel chaotic. You’re trying to be a good mom, partner, professional, friend — all while keeping up with the million other things running through your head.

And you’re exhausted.

I’ve had those days. And something I’ve learned along the way is this:

It’s okay to feel your feels.

For a long time, I thought I needed to figure out why I was feeling a certain way.

Why am I so stressed?
Why am I angry?
Why is this bothering me so much?
Why can’t I just get it together?

But sometimes we don’t need to immediately analyze, fix, or talk ourselves out of what we’re feeling.

Sometimes we can simply say:

I’m having a hard day. And that’s okay.

Maybe you need to go cry in the bathroom for five minutes. Maybe you’re pissed off and need to let yourself be mad. Maybe you need to step away from a task because you know pushing through it right now isn’t good for you.

That doesn’t mean you’re failing.

It means you’re human.

We experience stress, frustration, sadness, anger, disappointment, overwhelm — and a whole lot of other emotions that aren’t always pretty or convenient.

I’ve realized that the harder I try to resist an emotion, the louder it seems to get.

But when I can acknowledge it — Yep, I’m really frustrated right now — something shifts.

I don’t have to stay there forever. I don’t have to make a major decision from that place. I don’t even have to understand it completely.

I can just let myself feel it.

And then I can give myself what I need in that moment.

Maybe that’s space. Maybe it’s a walk. Maybe it’s writing everything down. Maybe it’s calling someone you trust. Maybe it’s closing the laptop and coming back tomorrow.

You don’t have to be productive through every emotion.

Especially as women and moms, we’re carrying a lot. We’re often taking care of everyone else while simultaneously trying to grow careers, build businesses, maintain relationships, run households, and somehow still make room for ourselves.

You’re allowed to have a day when it feels heavy.

You’re allowed to be frustrated.

You’re allowed to cry.

You’re allowed to step away.

And you’re allowed to come back when you’re ready.

Because feelings are temporary. They move through us like waves. Some are bigger than others, and some knock us around a little more than we’d like.

But they pass.

So the next time you catch yourself thinking, Why am I feeling like this? I shouldn’t be this upset, try replacing it with:

This is how I feel right now. I’m going to let myself feel it — and I know I won’t feel this way forever.

Feel your feels.

Then, when you’re ready, keep moving forward.

You don’t have to have it all together to be the boss of your life.

Much love,
Monica
